[FIELD NOTE]

Whisper transcript contains the same sentence repeated hundreds of times, wrecking alignment

Looking at the transcription files for a book that wouldn't align, whole stretches are the same sentence repeated over and over, with absurd timings (several sentences all marked as spanning one second). The audio itself is fine at those timestamps. Storyteller doesn't flag this anywhere, it just produces a badly aligned readaloud.

Resolution: This is a known whisper.cpp hallucination loop, not a Storyteller bug: the model latches onto a phrase and emits it repeatedly for a long span of audio, and the aligner then has nothing real to match against. It is markedly more common with large-v3 than with large-v3-turbo (see whisper.cpp issue #612 for upstream discussion). Switch the transcription model to large-v3-turbo and re-run transcription for the affected book — tiny.en also avoids it and is usually good enough for alignment purposes on English-language books. Also check that turbo mode is set to 1: a turbo mode setting greater than 1 can trigger the timing error-correction path and produce nonsensical clip durations on top of the repetition. Storyteller does not yet auto-detect repeated swathes and retry, so inspect the transcript yourself when a chapter aligns badly.
