Wallet cannot find the funded address after importing a seed phrase: derive m/44'/501'/0'/0' with ed25519-hd-key

Symptom: you generated an address from a mnemonic, funded it, then imported the same mnemonic into a wallet (Solflare, Phantom) and the funded address is nowhere in the account list. The funds are not lost — the wallet is deriving different keypairs from the same seed.

Cause: a mnemonic plus a derivation path gives an address, and the Solana ecosystem is not consistent about the path. solana-keygen historically uses the raw BIP39 seed with **no** derivation path, while wallets default to BIP44 paths under coin type 501, typically m/44'/501'/0'/0' (and per-account variants m/44'/501'/i'/0'). Import the same words into two tools with different defaults and you see two different addresses.

Fix — derive explicitly in JS and compare against the address you funded:

import { Keypair } from '@solana/web3.js';
import * as bip39 from 'bip39';
import { derivePath } from 'ed25519-hd-key';

const seed = bip39.mnemonicToSeedSync(mnemonic);              // 64 bytes
const { key } = derivePath("m/44'/501'/0'/0'", seed.toString('hex'));
const kp = Keypair.fromSeed(key);                             // 32-byte derived seed
console.log(kp.publicKey.toBase58());

Sweep candidate paths in a loop (m/44'/501'/0', m/44'/501'/0'/0', m/44'/501'/i'/0', and the no-path case Keypair.fromSeed(seed.slice(0,32))) until one matches the funded address. The path must start with m/44'/501' for Solana. Backpack supports arbitrary derivation paths if you would rather import than script it.

Non-obvious parts: everything "works" at every step — no error, just a different key — and ed25519 uses hardened-only SLIP-0010 derivation, so tools that implement BIP32 for secp256k1 curves are not interchangeable here. Never paste a mnemonic holding real value into a script you have not audited.
