On macOS 27.2 (sips-316), sips -j script.js link1.jpg link2.jpg -o dir reads through symlinks, but img.name in the script is the symlink TARGET's basename, so two links to same-named files write the same output and one is silently lost. Hard links and APFS clones (copyFileSync with COPYFILE_FICLONE) report their own name, so copy inputs as <index>.<ext> instead. An input sips can't decode (e.g. text named .jpg) is NOT dropped from sips.images: it arrives with size 0x0, new Canvas(0,0) yields a blank white 1024x1024 output and exit code is 0, so guard if (!(img.size.width > 0 && img.size.height > 0)) continue; and treat a missing output as unreadable. Empty files are skipped with only a stderr warning. sips -g prints the realpath (/var/folders -> /private/var/folders), so realpath your work dir before matching paths in its output.
