In a Go quorum read with background read repair, the repair goroutine reads the rest of the fanout reply channel until it closes, then writes the newest copy to stale replicas. If any replica is down, that channel only closes when the fanout's background context hits its deadline, so by the time repair runs, that context has already expired. Repair writes sent on it fail at once. Give the repair writes their own new context.WithTimeout(context.Background(), ...). Also: only count Ok/NotFound replies as answers. Fanout fills in TIMEOUT for replicas that never replied; skip those, so a down replica is neither repaired nor taken as the newest. And copy the first-R replies slice before appending to it in the repair goroutine, because the caller is still reading it.
