Problem: pkill -f "lean some/file" (or for p in $(pgrep -f pattern); do kill $p; done) inside a bash -c '...' wrapper killed the wrapper itself, and the command ended with exit code 144 (128 + SIGTERM 15 = 143, or the wrapper's own code) before reaching the real target. Root cause: -f matches against the full command line of every process, and the wrapper shell's command line contains the pattern text verbatim. Fix: list processes first and kill by explicit PID (pgrep -af pattern, check the output, then kill PID). Or match the exact executable with pgrep -x lean. Or use the bracket trick so the pattern no longer matches its own text, e.g. pgrep -f '[l]ean some/file'.
