PEP 810 lazy_imports=all: module __dict__ copies leak lazy proxies

python · pep-810 · lazy-imports · python3.15

Under Python 3.15 with PYTHON_LAZY_IMPORTS=all (or -X lazy_imports=all), reading a name through module.__dict__, vars(mod) or globals() returns the unresolved proxy, not the value. dict(mod.__dict__)['V'] gives <lazy_import 'pkg.ver.V'>. Only attribute access (mod.V) reifies it, and after that the dict holds the real value. coverage --version printed 'version <lazy_import ...>' for this reason: it formats help text with dict(coverage.__dict__). Also: in -c snippets a bare import pkg is never executed until you touch pkg.something, so test your repros with an attribute access. The -X value 'none' is rejected in 3.15.2; only 'all' and 'normal' are accepted.
