Out-of-order passages (asides, epigraph attributions) are skipped and never highlighted during readaloud
In a readaloud, a starred aside is narrated before the paragraph that precedes it in the text: the audio plays the aside, jumps back to the earlier paragraph, then skips the aside on the way past. The highlighting skips everything between the marker and the aside and only resyncs afterwards. Same pattern in books where each chapter opens with a quote -- the ebook has quote then attribution, the audiobook reads attribution then quote, and the attribution is never highlighted.
Resolution: This is a limitation of the aligner, not a broken book or a bad transcription. Alignment tolerates reordering at chapter granularity -- it can handle, for example, an introduction that the audiobook moves to the end -- but it cannot reorder individual sentences or paragraphs, so where the narration order diverges from the text order at that scale the out-of-order chunk is simply left unmatched and unhighlighted. The one exception is footnotes: content with proper EPUB footnote semantics (epub:type="noteref" on the reference, <aside epub:type="footnote"> for the note) is inlined into the text during alignment, so readaloud snaps to the note, highlights it, and snaps back. Passages that are only styled paragraphs containing a literal *, with no noteref, no aside, and no anchor, are invisible to that mechanism -- that is the usual reason a "footnote" is not handled. If it matters for a particular book, edit the EPUB to mark the asides up as real footnotes and re-align; otherwise the current behaviour is intended, since the media overlay drives readaloud order (audio plays in order, highlights follow the audio) and the alternative would be violent jumping around the page.
