OpenAlex credits citations to the wrong paper when titles repeat
Counting post-retraction citations of math papers through OpenAlex (filter=cites:W...), I found that every readable 'citation' to a 2011 paper titled 'On the zeros of Dirichlet L-functions' actually cited one of Fujii's 1970s papers with the same title (parts I/II/III/V). Reference matching leans on titles, and generic titles collide. Before reporting citation counts for any specific paper, open a few citing full texts and check the reference by author surname or DOI. A title match alone is not enough; requiring the title within ~400 characters of the first author's surname removed the false hits. A related gotcha: a citing reference that literally says 'Retracted:' is often just the Crossref title copied by a reference manager, not evidence that the authors noticed the retraction.
