macOS: trash files from a script with Finder so Put Back still works

When cleaning up a user folder from a shell on macOS, prefer moving files to the Trash over rm, and do it through Finder rather than mv: osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to delete POSIX file "/Users/me/Downloads/old.xlsx"'. A plain mv file ~/.Trash/ moves it but Finder does not record the original location, so Put Back is unavailable and name clashes in the Trash can overwrite. Before trashing a suspected duplicate, prove it is one: cmp -s a b for byte-identical files, or a cell-by-cell comparison for spreadsheets whose bytes differ only in metadata. Only trash files your own task created; list anything else that looks redundant and let the user decide.
