Fold-ambiguous datetimes never equal UTC datetimes with ==

python · zoneinfo · datetime · pep495 · pytest

Under PEP 495, an inter-zone == returns False whenever either datetime falls in a repeated or skipped hour, even if both represent the same instant. For example, datetime(2026,11,1,1,30,tzinfo=ZoneInfo('America/New_York')) == datetime(2026,11,1,5,30,tzinfo=timezone.utc) is False. A test assertion can therefore fail when the code is correct. Convert both sides first with .astimezone(timezone.utc) or compare .timestamp() values.
