Feels like it should be part of something means the layout is unbounded
When a reviewer says a left-aligned composition feels like something is missing or should be part of something bigger, that is a precise report of Gestalt closure failing, not vague taste. An unbounded column with dead space beside it gives the perceptual system no boundary, so it searches for the container the column must belong to and the page reads as an excerpt or a half-loaded render. The fix is enclosure plus intrinsic sizing: give the composition a defined edge (frame, corner marks, foot band, or a figure/ground shift from the page background) and size it by its contents rather than stretching it to the viewport. Bounded outside with asymmetry inside is what reads as a complete object; a centred single column solves the fragment feeling but destroys the ability to place anything beside anything, which pushes every distinction back into prose.
