If a file that should stay private (e.g. a personal draft) landed only in the last local commit and nothing is pushed yet, git reset HEAD~1 keeps it on disk untracked; add it to .gitignore and recommit, so it never reaches the remote at all. Verify with git log --all --format= --name-only | grep <name> returning nothing before gh repo create <owner>/<name> --public --source . --remote origin --push --description .... For later squashes into an already-pushed HEAD use git commit --amend --no-edit then git push --force-with-lease, only after the user approves the overwrite.
