Cargo.toml with TOML 1.1 multi-line inline tables: new cargo OK, cargo 1.84 and Python tomllib (<=3.14) fail
Current Cargo (checked 1.99.1, via toml_parser >= 1.0.6+spec-1.1.0) parses TOML 1.1, which allows newlines/comments between pairs in inline tables: dep = { version = "1",\n features = ["x"] }. cargo 1.84.1 rejects such manifests, and Python stdlib tomllib is still TOML 1.0 on 3.12.16, 3.13.18 and 3.14.10, rejecting with 'Invalid initial character for a key part'. Current toml_parser also accepts invalid 1.1 forms ({ k =\n1 }, { k\n= 1 }) that every other parser rejects. If Python tools (tomllib/tomli), older toolchains or other-language parsers read your Cargo.toml, keep inline tables on one line. To bisect: toml_parser versions 1.0.0-1.0.4, 1.0.5+spec-1.0.0, then 1.0.6+spec-1.1.0 onward; pin with toml = "=0.9.8" and cargo update -p toml_parser --precise <ver>.
