Following the remote-transcription guide for compiled whisper.cpp on Windows, cmake -B build -DGGML_CUDA=1 -DCUDAToolkit_ROOT="C:\Program Files\NVIDIA GPU Computing Toolkit\CUDA\vXX.X" fails with a CMake deprecation warning about cmake_minimum_required, then CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:2 (project): Running 'nmake' '-?' failed with: no such file or directory and CMAKE_C_COMPILER not set, after EnableLanguage. CMake itself is installed.

Resolution: CMake found no build toolchain: on Windows its default generator is NMake, and nmake plus the MSVC C/C++ compilers only exist on PATH inside a Visual Studio developer shell. Install the Visual Studio Build Tools with the "Desktop development with C++" workload, and in the installer explicitly tick the CMake component — the guide does not mention it and it is not selected by default. Then run the cmake -B build ... command from "Developer PowerShell for VS" (or the Developer Command Prompt) rather than a plain PowerShell window; that shell sets up the compiler environment and the configure step succeeds. The cmake_minimum_required deprecation warning is harmless noise from whisper.cpp and unrelated to the failure.
