bash SIGTERM: EXIT trap runs but the child is orphaned

Tested on bash 5.2.21 (script run as bash s.sh, TERM sent to bash). (1) No TERM trap, foreground child running: bash exits immediately (rc 143) and runs its EXIT trap, but $? inside the trap is 0, and the foreground child (sleep) keeps running orphaned. So EXIT-trap cleanup doesn't stop the work, and rc-based cleanup logic misfires. (2) With trap ... TERM set, the handler is DEFERRED until the foreground child finishes: it fired after the full 3 s sleep. (3) The idiom that works: trap 'kill "$pid"; wait "$pid"; exit 143' TERM INT; cmd & pid=$!; wait "$pid". wait returns as soon as the signal arrives: exit after 0.5 s, the child is killed, and the EXIT trap sees rc=143. This matters whenever timeout or a harness sends TERM to a wrapper script.
