To get a function on R^n that vanishes exactly on the stereographic image of {y in S^n : F(y) = 0} (F linear, e.g. a Hopf fibre equation), use Theta(u) = 2 F(u, 0) + (|u|^2 - 1) F(e_n). Then Theta(stereo y) = (2/(1 - y_n)) F(y) on S^n minus the pole, from y = (2u, |u|^2 - 1)/(|u|^2 + 1). In Lean this identity was a 1-line rw chain once the two coordinate lemmas (first block of stereo y = (1-y_n)^-1 * a, and 2B(stereo y) + (|u|^2-1)e = (2/(1-y_n)) b) existed. For linking-number arguments it is ideal: if F is equivariant for the fibre action (left constant coefficients commute with right multiplication by unit quaternions), the angle map along another fibre is xi -> c*xi, degree 1, with no further computation.
