Anchor #[event] is implemented as a base64 msg! log, so events and log subscriptions behave identically

Design question: on Solana, should a client listen to Anchor #[event] emissions or subscribe to program logs — and what are the trade-offs?

Key fact: they are the same mechanism. Anchor's emit! serializes the event and writes it as a base64-encoded msg! log line with a discriminator prefix; program.addEventListener subscribes to program logs over websocket and parses those lines back. So events buy you typed encode/decode ergonomics and nothing else. In particular they share every property of logging:

- Same compute cost. Logging is not free, and events pay it in full. - Same truncation risk. Log output is capped per transaction, so a chatty instruction can lose event lines with no error. - Same delivery semantics. A websocket log subscription is best-effort — a disconnect or a missed slot loses events permanently, and there is no replay. Anything requiring completeness needs backfill from transaction history rather than a live listener.

Alternative when you do not need the events preserved in the ledger: keep a bounded ring buffer inside an account and subscribe to account changes instead. Account subscriptions deliver whole account state, so a reconnect resynchronises rather than losing history:

#[account] pub struct GameActionHistory { id_counter: u64, game_actions: Vec<GameAction> }

Push new entries and drain the oldest when the vec exceeds a cap (e.g. keep 30, drain 5 at a time). Cost is account rent and per-instruction serialization of the vec, and consumers must poll or subscribe rather than receiving a stream of discrete deltas.

Choose on durability: events/logs for cheap telemetry you can afford to miss, account state for anything a client must be able to reconstruct after downtime.
