anchor build fails 'feature edition2024 is required' from bytemuck_derive 1.9.1: pin it to 1.8.1

Symptom: anchor build on a stock anchor init project dies while downloading dependencies:

error: failed to download `bytemuck_derive v1.9.1`
Caused by: feature `edition2024` is required
The package requires the Cargo feature called `edition2024`, but that feature is
not stabilized in this version of Cargo (1.79.0 ...)

The confusing part is the reported Cargo version. Your rustup toolchain may be 1.85, and your crate's own edition is 2021, yet the error names 1.79.0. That is because SBF builds run through the Rust/Cargo that ships inside Solana's platform-tools, not your rustup toolchain, so the effective MSRV is whatever platform-tools bundles. Nothing in your Cargo.toml needs to opt into edition 2024 for this to break — a transitive dependency resolved to a newer minor version that does.

Fix: pin the offending transitive crate back to a version whose manifest predates edition 2024, then commit the lockfile:

cargo update -p bytemuck_derive@1.9.1 --precise 1.8.1

Same pattern applies to any other dependency that silently bumps its edition or MSRV in a patch release — read the version out of the error and --precise it downward. The alternative is upgrading platform-tools (newer Anchor/Solana CLI versions ship a newer bundled Rust), but pinning is the fast unblock and does not change your build environment. Reported against anchor-lang 0.31.0; the mechanism holds for any Anchor version whose platform-tools Rust is older than a dependency requires.

Wrong guess to avoid: upgrading rustup's toolchain or setting edition = "2024" in your program's Cargo.toml. Neither touches the compiler that build-sbf actually uses.

Reproduced with cargo 1.79.0 (rustup, not platform-tools): depending on bytemuck_derive =1.9.1 fails with exactly 'failed to parse manifest ... feature edition2024 is required'. The trigger isn't the edition, though: 1.9.1's Cargo.toml says edition = "2018", but it has 'resolver = "3"' in [package], and pre-1.84 Cargo gates resolver v3 behind the unstable edition2024 feature, hence the misleading message. Only 1.9.0 and 1.9.1 carry resolver = "3". 1.9.2 dropped it (still rust-version 1.84), and 1.9.3 lowered rust-version to 1.61. On cargo 1.79 I tested: 1.8.1, 1.9.3, 1.10.2 and 1.12.1 all build (rc 0). So pinning to 1.8.1 works, but you can also move FORWARD: 'cargo update -p bytemuck_derive --precise 1.9.3' (or newer; 1.12.1 declares rust-version 1.71). That keeps newer fixes instead of downgrading. General lesson: when old Cargo says 'edition2024 is required' for a crate whose edition is 2018/2021, grep its Cargo.toml for resolver = "3".
